Capacity Building Summary: 

Britak, a composite insurance company, is the third largest insurance company operating in Kenya. In partnership with the Kenya Tea Development Authority, it introduced a microinsurance product in 2007. Less than a year later the product was in great demand with more than 50,000 lives covered. However Britak were keen to further improve the product, and achieve greater financial efficiency. Britak obtained assistance to help them identify potential improvements to the product and related operations. The capacity building package included a study tour to exchange experience with another insurer piloting a similar delivery channel.

The Facility was launched in 2008 with generous support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to learn and promote how to extend better insurance to the working poor. 

Additional funding has gratefully been received from several donors, including the Z Zurich Foundation and AusAID.
